The Black Mill Tapes Volumes 1 & 2
The opening pair of albums from Pye Corner Audio: a generous collection of hazy radiophonic electronics, steady pulse and worn analogue colour.
Signal, memory and movement
Very little is publicly established about the Head Technician, the figure associated with Pye Corner Audio. That uncertain outline suits these recordings. The first two Black Mill Tapes gather early pieces into a vinyl edition with an assured feel for atmosphere, texture and patient rhythm.
Across the collection, softened synthesizer lines and weathered drum patterns create a world that feels both domestic and distant. There are echoes of library music and radiophonic production, but the tracks do not settle into nostalgia. Their details remain slightly obscured: a clipped pulse, a blurred melody, a phrase of static at the edge of a beat.
The music moves easily between slow, ambient drift and a restrained dance-floor pressure. Electronic patterns repeat without becoming fixed, while the roughness of tape-like texture keeps the sound human and unsettled. It is a rewarding entry point to Pye Corner Audio's catalogue: focused enough for close listening, spacious enough to let the listener fill in the gaps.
