A slow pressure of sound
Work Death is the recording name associated with Rhode Island musician Scott Reber, whose work has circulated through small-run tapes and live noise settings. Phone About To Ring arrived quietly before this edition, but its focused use of rumble, hiss and unstable texture makes a strong case for returning to it.
Across two extended passages, the record holds together a thick field of compressed noise, distant impact and persistent bass. The material is severe without becoming static: layers move at different speeds, leaving brief openings where a muted harmonic edge can surface through the grain.
Reber remastered the work for this vinyl presentation. The result preserves the roughness of the source while making its internal balance easier to follow: tape-like crackle, dense low frequencies and higher, frayed tones all occupy their own uneasy space.
This is a concise album with a broad physical presence. Rather than asking for instant attention, it rewards time with its shifting mass, restrained pacing and carefully held tension.
